Blooming great for Coleraine
Thursday, 14 January 2010
COLERAINE has made it to the final of the prestigious RHS Britain in Bloom competition.
It has been nominated along with five other towns, Bury St Edmunds, Bicester, Colwyn Bay, Perth and Durham, in the Large Town/Small City (12,000 - 35,000) category.
67 cities, towns and villages from across the UK have been chosen to represent the very best in community horticulture, as they prepare to participate in the 2010 Royal Horticultural Society's (RHS) Britain in Bloom Finals.
Each year over a 1,000 communities participate in the campaign to demonstrate their accomplishments and ingenuity in horticulture, environmental responsibility and community participation. Each year these communities strive to earn a nomination to the UK Finals.
The 67, 2010 finalists will compete across 13 categories, of which seven are for towns, cities and urban groups with five categories covering villages and coastal communities and one for high achievers from any category. All who reach the UK Finals are aiming to earn the highest recognition for their efforts, a gold medal, and possibly be awarded the title of category winner.
The finalists' 'Bloom' year will officially launch on the March 24, 2010 with a mass planting exercise across the country, and close with the annual awards ceremony on the September 29, 2010. RHS Judges will visit each community throughout two weeks in August to appraise the entries and to prepare expert advice to help each community improve on their efforts for future years.
